JERUSALEM, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A barrage of 16 rockets was launched Friday night from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli city of Sderot and other settlements in southern Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that 10 of the rockets were intercepted by its Iron Dome defense system.

Following the barrage, seven people were treated for shock at Barzilai Hospital in the southern city of Ashkelon. In addition, a 14-year-old boy and a 50-year-old man were lightly injured when they tried to take shelter during a siren.

IDF added that fighter jets and helicopters attacked targets in the Gaza Strip a short while after the rocket barrage.

Earlier Friday, some 16,000 Palestinians demonstrated near the security border fence, hurled grenades, firebombs and rockets and lit tires on fire.

The Palestinians reported that four young demonstrators were killed by the Israeli army. In response, Israeli aircraft attacked three Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.
