MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Former Argentina international winger Maxi Rodriguez struck in second-half stoppage time as Penarol clinched Uruguay's Torneo Clausura trophy by defeating Progresso 1-0 on Saturday.
Rodriguez broke the deadlock in the 94th minute by latching onto a Fabian Estoyanoff pass and firing an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Sebastian Fuentes.
The victory came in the penultimate round of the tournament and handed Penarol a berth in the semifinal of the Primera Division championship against traditional rivals Nacional.
"We're halfway [to our goal]," Penarol coach Diego Lopez said after the match. "We have to celebrate it quietly, knowing that this is just a part of what we set out to achieve at the beginning of the season."
Penarol are Uruguay's most successful team with 49 Primera Division titles, three more than Nacional.
