GAZA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian fisherman was shot dead on Wednesday by Israeli soldiers' gunfire as he was on the beach of northern Gaza Strip, close to the border with Israel, medics and eyewitnesses said.
Ashraf al-Qedra, health ministry spokesman in Gaza, said that Nawaf al-Attar, 23-year-old fisherman, from northern Gaza was shot in abdomen and died of sustained wounds on his way to the hospital.
There has been no immediate response from Israeli army official to the incident.
Meanwhile, Nizar Ayyash, chairman of Gaza fishermen association, condemned the killing. He told Xinhua that "it is an Israeli violation to the fishermen work, the breadwinners of their families."
In the Gaza Strip, which has been ruled by the Islamic Hamas movement since mid-2007, there are 3,800 Palestinian fishermen, according to the association.
The death of the fisherman came one day after a cease-fire was announced between Israel and Gaza militant groups led by Hamas, following two days of tension that killed 14 Palestinians and one Israeli.
