BEIRUT, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army said on Tuesday that it is following up closely on the situation on its southern borders, hours after Israel announced that it started blocking tunnels allegedly built by Hezbollah, local media reported.

"The army command assures that the situation is calm ... and is being followed up on," Elnashra, an online independent newspaper, quoted the army as saying.

The army said that it continues to implement its duties along the borders in coordination with the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Meanwhile, the UNIFIL said it is working on preserving stability in the area and it has increased its patrolling along the Blue Line in cooperation with the Lebanese army.

Earlier in the day, Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said the military had detected tunnels crossing from Lebanon into northern Israel and that the country had initiated an operation to thwart them.

Conricus said the operation would be inside Israel, and would not cross the border.
