BEIRUT, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed Thursday the existence of a tunnel close to the Blue Line after an inspection of the location near Metula in northern Israel, according to a statement issued by the UNIFIL.

Accordingly, UNIFIL is now engaged with the parties to pursue urgent follow-up actions. The statement said that "it is very important to determine the full picture of this serious occurrence."

UNIFIL will discuss its preliminary findings with the appropriate authorities in Lebanon.

Israel announced Tuesday that the Israeli military had detected tunnels crossing from Lebanon into northern Israel and that the country started an operation to destroy them.

Also, Israeli military announced Thursday that another such underground tunnel had been uncovered in the Lebanese border.

Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia in Lebanon, fought a month-long war in 2006 that ended in a cease-fire.
