LIMA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Peruvian Football Federation president Edwin Oviedo has been placed in preventive detention for 18 months as part of a corruption probe.
Public prosecutors announced the measure after the 47-year-old was arrested on charges of participating in a graft racket involving judges and company executives.
Prosecutors have also requested that Oviedo be jailed for 24 months for allegedly ordering the killing of two trade unionists at a sugar company that he owned.
Oviedo has faced mounting pressure to resign in recent months amid allegations that he gave World Cup tickets to a judge who omitted him from the murder trial.
The scandal does not appear to have affected the fortunes of Peru's national team. Under Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca, the Blanquirroja qualified for this year's World Cup in Russia, their first appearance in football's showpiece tournament since 1982.
