TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Washington has failed to divide Iranians by imposing all-out sanctions against Tehran, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said here on Wednesday.

All the U.S. anti-Iran measures over the past two years, particularly the imposition of comprehensive sanctions, were aimed at creating division and street riots, but they failed to achieve their aims, Khamenei was quoted by the leader's official website as saying.

The Iranian leader called for the vigilance of the Iranian officials, saying that "although the plots of the enemy have been foiled, the officials should be vigilant, since the United States is a tricky and deceptive enemy."

The United States would not be able to restore its dominance over Iran, he stressed.

Iran's economy has faced hard times following the return of the U.S. comprehensive sanctions, including energy and financial sanctions, in the past months, which had been removed pursuant to the Iranian international 2015 nuclear agreement.

The U.S. President Donald Trump withdraw from the deal in May and vowed to impose "strongest ever" sanctions against Iran under the pretext that the deal is flawed and Iran has continued to develop missile program.

Iran has said that it has remained committed to the landmark deal and that its missile program is for deterrent purposes.
