RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday his government will adopt rigorous criteria on immigration.

Through a Facebook live broadcast, the president-elect reaffirmed that the country will leave the UN Global Compact for Migration, which was signed recently by 163 nations, including Brazil.

Ernesto Araujo, Bolsonaro's pick for foreign minister, said earlier this month that Brazil would leave the agreement.

"Unfortunately, the current Foreign Ministry signed the UN's migration pact. I think everybody knows what is going on in France, it is unbearable to live in some parts of France," said Bolsonaro.

"We do not want that for Brazil. We are not against immigrants, but to enter Brazil there must be rigorous criteria," he added.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira believed Bolsonaro's decision to quit the compact is a mistake and a regression.
