Marine shot and killed on duty at Marine Barracks in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. Marine was shot and killed while on duty early Tuesday morning at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Marine Corps said.

Metropolitan Police Department authorities responded to the scene, the Marine Corps said in a press release. "The incident is currently under investigation and the Marine's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin."

No threat to local residents exists as the event, which occurred at 5 a.m., transpired within the grounds of Marine Barracks, the release added.

"The command's priorities are to take care of the Marine's family and friends," said Colonel Don Tomich, commanding officer of Marine Barracks.
