TEHRAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Sorkheh Hesar National Park in Tehran will become the first "smart park" in the Iranian capital under the city's initiative, Eghtesadonline news website reported on Saturday.

The initiative is proposed by Tehran Municipality's Information and Communications Technology Organization, the report said.

The park will be equipped with smart security cameras, smart parking lots and a smart irrigation system.

Unlike traditional irrigation controllers which operate on a pre-programmed schedule and timers, smart irrigation controllers will monitor weather, soil condition, evaporation and plant water to automatically adjust the watering schedule.

Recreational facilities, a health center and a wastewater treatment system will also be built in the park, according to the report.

"Employing smart technologies in Sorkheh Hesar National Park is a pilot project. It aims to manifest what Tehran Municipality envisions for the capital when speaking about smart development," Mohammad Farjoud, head of the city's Information and Communications Technology Organization, was quoted as saying.

Morteza Rahmanzadeh, mayor of District 13 of Tehran, said work is still in its initial stage while feasibility studies are underway for building the smart park.

Rahmanzadeh said the park's ecosystem and tourism potential have been studied in detail to help underpin future eco-friendly projects.

Sorkheh Hesar Park, covering an area of 9,000 hectares, is located in east of Tehran. Under the management of the Department of Environment since 1980, the park has hosted environmental and tourism projects, some of which are in their infancy.
