SANAA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels said they launched a drone attack on a Saudi military base in the kingdom's border city of Asir on Friday.

Houthi al-Masirah TV said the attack targeted "the Saudi military leadership and a gathering of Saudi troops," without providing further details.

No comments are available yet from the Saudi side on the rebels' claim.

The Houthi attack using an explosive-laden drone, if confirmed, was the second of its kind in two days after the attack on a parade at the Anad military base in Yemen's southern province of Lahj on Thursday, which killed at least six Saudi-backed Yemeni government soldiers and wounded 20 others.

Currently, a fragile cease-fire between the Saudi-backed government and Iranian-backed rebels in the country's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah has apparently stalled.

On Wednesday, the UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths briefed the Security Council that both the government and Houthis "have largely adhered to the cease-fire in the Hodeidah Governorate that entered into force on Dec. 18, 2018."

"There has been a significant decrease in hostilities since then," said Griffiths.

The UN envoy said his team will continue to cement the fragile cease-fire and move forward to achieve a comprehensive peace agreement.

The Houthis have controlled much of Yemen's north since late 2014, while the government is in control of much of the country's south.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab military coalition in Yemen against the Iran-backed Houthi militia since March 2015, in order to reinstate the exiled Yemeni government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
