MUSCAT, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Omani Ministry of Transport and Communications on Monday officially opened the airport of Duqm, about 600 km south of the capital Muscat.

Covering an area of 27,386 square meters, the new airport has an estimated annual capacity of half a million passengers, with the potential to expand to 2 million passengers.

At the opening ceremony, Minister of Transport and Communications Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futtaisi said the Duqm airport will increase the number of passengers in the region, and contribute to the economic, social and tourist development of Oman.

The Duqm airport is the third one in the country after the Muscat and Salalah airports.
