JERUSALEM, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said on Sunday that it had intercepted a rocket fired toward the northern Golan Heights.

"A rocket was fired at the northern Golan Heights and was intercepted by the 'Iron Dome' aerial defense system," a military spokesperson said in a statement, without elaborating on the circumstances.

The statement came about an hour after Syria's official television reported that air defense systems in southern Syria thwarted an Israeli air attack.

Israel says its military has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in recent years against Iranian and Syrian army positions in the war-torn country, in addition to bombings of weapons convoyed for Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite militia.
