AMMAN, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Monday voiced its rejection of the establishment of a new Israeli airport near Aqaba.
In a statement to the press Monday, Haitham Misto, head of Jordan's Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, said Jordan rejected Israel's establishment of the airport in its current location.
"This violates standards regarding the respect for the sovereignty of the airspace and territories of other countries," Misto said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Xinhua.
"The Jordanian government informed the International Civil Aviation Authority of its strong objection to such violation," Misto said, adding that Israel needs to honor intenational agreements in this regard.
He stressed that the decision to operate the airport should not be a unilateral decision by Israel, adding that Israel needs to abide by the international regulations in the field of aviation.
"Jordan will keep all its options open to defend its interests and will follow up with the International Civil Aviation Authority to ensure reaching a solution in line with the international laws and standards," he said.
On Monday, Israel opened a new international airport outside its Red Sea resort of Eilat near Aqaba city.
