MEXICO CITY, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Former Boca Juniors and Argentina international striker Martin Palermo was Monday named head coach of Mexican side Pachuca.

The 45-year-old replaces Spaniard Francisco Ayestaran, who was sacked following the team's 3-0 loss to Club America in the Liga MX Clausura tournament on Saturday.

"Do you want to know who is our new manager?" Pachuca said in a social media post alongside an image of Palermo.

Palermo has had spells in charge of Argentina's Godoy Cruz and Arsenal de Sarandi as well as Chile's Union Espanola since starting his coaching career in 2012.

His backroom staff at Pachuca will include former Boca and Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri, according to local media reports.

Pachuca's squad includes Argentines Franco Jara, Nahuel Bustos, Ismael Sosa and Leonardo Ulloa.
