ANKARA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- A group attacked a military base of Turkish soldiers in northern Iraq on Saturday under "provocation of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party)," said Turkey's Defense Ministry.
"Partial vehicle and material damage occurred in the attack. Necessary measures are taken regarding the incident," said the ministry on its official Twitter account.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had a phone call with the Prime Minister of Kurdish Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani to discuss the incident late Saturday, Turkish diplomatic source told Xinhua.
Barzani assured Ankara that they will take necessary measures.
A group of protesters broke in the Turkish military camp near Dohuk province in northern Iraq. Footages on social media showed protestors burning vehicles and standing on tanks.
The protests are reportedly against recent airstrikes of the Turkish Air Forces targeting the PKK in the northern Iraq.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. Turkish military has been carrying out anti-terror operations against PKK positions in northern Iraq since July 2015.
