BAGHDAD, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- A mother and two of her children were killed Friday in a roadside bomb explosion in north of Tikrit, the capital of Iraq's northern central province of Salahudin, a local official said.

The incident took place in the afternoon when a roadside bomb detonated near the family members who were on a picnic near Makhoul mountain in west of the town of al-Zuwiya, Mohammed Zaidan, mayor of the town, told Xinhua.

The blast killed two children and wounded five of the family members, and later the mother of the children died in the hospital due to fatal wounds, Zaidan said, adding that the roadside bomb is likely to be left by Islamic State (IS) militants who once seized the area after June 2014, when IS group made a significant blitzkrieg and seized large swathes of Iraqi territories in the north and west.

Late in 2017, Iraq declared full liberation of all its territories from the IS militants after the security forces, backed by an international coalition, recaptured all areas seized by the extremist group.
