JERUSALEM, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Israel said on Thursday it had returned a Lebanese civilian to Lebanon two days after he crossed the border into Israel and was arrested.

The incident took place on Tuesday when Israeli troops in the highly secured border spotted a suspect crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory.

A military spokesperson said the suspect was apprehended right after crossing the border and transferred for further questioning.

"On Thursday morning, he was returned to Lebanon following the completion of his investigation," the spokespersons said, elaborating on the circumstances that led the suspect to cross the border.

The spokesperson said that the suspect was "monitored by IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops throughout the incident."

Israel and Lebanon share a border. Local laws forbid both Israeli and Lebanese citizens from traveling to each other's countries.

Tensions have been especially high along the Israel-Lebanon border over the past months in the wake of Israel's operation to locate and destroy cross-border tunnels.

Israel says the tunnels were built by the Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia backed by Iran, in order to attack Israel.
