Thai police net over 500 law-breaking foreigners

BANGKOK, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Thai police rounded up more than 500 foreigners, most of whom entered the country illegally, immigration police bureau said on Friday.

The 522 people were arrested at 220 different locations around Thailand, according to Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai, deputy chief of Immigration Police Bureau.

Altogether 287 foreigners, mostly from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, were charged with entering Thailand illegally. Some 15 people were accused of overstaying.

Itthipol said 220 people from different countries are facing other charges which he did not give details.

The deputy chief said there are a high number of foreigners working without permission in Thailand.

Thai police have launched several raids at schools, private companies and restaurants recently and have netted hundreds of foreigners, most of whom were accused of staying in Thailand illegally, using fake visas, and cross-border crimes in the country.
