KIEV, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six observers from the special monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) came under small arms fire in eastern Ukraine that brought no casualties, local media reported on Wednesday, citing an OSCE report.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning near the Zolote disengagement area in Lugansk region, when the OSCE patrol was monitoring the security situation in the area to enable repair works to water pipes.

The monitors heard about five shots of small arms fire, followed by the sound of bullets flying about 10 meters over their heads.

It remains unclear who was responsible for the incident.

The OSCE, of which Ukraine is a member, sent its special observer mission to the country in March 2014, following a request from the Ukrainian government. Currently, more than 800 unarmed OSCE observers are deployed in Ukraine, with the majority of them monitoring the cease-fire between government troops and armed groups in Donbas.
