BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China's agricultural experts said Friday that the situation of African swine fever is under control in the country.

The country has reported 111 outbreaks in 28 provincial regions since the first outbreak was discovered in August.

The government's efforts to control the outbreaks have proved effective and the situation has been kept under control, Chen Huanchun, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and agricultural expert, said at a press conference.

African swine fever is a highly contagious, viral disease that infects pigs. It does not affect humans or other animal species.

Yang Hanchun, a professor at China Agricultural University, said compared with the second half of 2018, further spread of the disease has been contained.

Supplies of pork, the country's staple meat, have remained sufficient, while prices remained stable, Yang said.
