ASUNCION, Paraguay, April 1 (Xinhua) -- British company Hawk-Eye Innovations Limited was on Monday selected as the video assistant referee (VAR) technology provider for South American football's top club tournaments.
The contract involves the implementation and provision of the system for the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said in a statement.
Hawk-Eye was awarded the 2019-2022 deal following a competitive bidding process that included four other companies, according to the Paraguay-based body.
"[Hawk-Eye] is a leading innovator in sports technology, a pioneer in the implementation of the VAR, which offers reliable and innovative refereeing solutions," CONMEBOL said.
VAR was introduced in South American football's major tournaments in 2017. The technology made its World Cup debut in Russia last year and is also used in many domestic leagues, including the top divisions in Spain, Italy, Germany and France.
