BEIRUT, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel Karim Ali assured Thursday that Syria will succeed in restoring its Golan Heights, local media reported.
"Syrian has never bargained on its territory. We will win at the end and we will restore the Golan Heights to protect the dignity of our nation. We will never compromise on this and we will never back down," Ali was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an independent online newspaper.
Ali said that U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights aims at supporting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the coming elections as the latter's most recent tenure in office has been marred by corruption scandals.
"The whole world knows that Trump made this latest move to support Netanyahu in the coming elections in Israel but they will never win against Syria and the dignity of its people," Ali said.
Trump has officially recognized last month Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, seized from Syria in 1967 which was met with strong condemnation from countries all over the world.
