TEHRAN, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called for expanded energy trade and transport routes with Iraq.

Rouhani mande the remarks at a joint press conference with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in the capital Tehran.

Earlier in the day, the two leaders discussed the implementation of the agreements reached between Iran and Iraq during Rouhani's visit to Iraq in March.

"The exports of electricity and gas will continue and we are ready to expand these agreements both with Iraq and other countries," Rouhani said in a live broadcast of the state TV.

The construction of a railway linking the two countries is expected to begin in the coming months, he said.

Rouhani also welcomed the implementation of an agreement which facilitates the visa issuance between the two countries by cancelling visa charges.

A future visit of the governor of the Central Bank of Iran to Iraq would accelerate the banking relations between the two countries, he said.

The constant contacts between the two neighbors come amid the U.S. pressures on Iraq to stop energy imports from Iran.

Iraqi President Barham Salih has said his country will not be part of the U.S. sanctions against Iran.
