SOFIA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The second event of this year's UIPM Pentathlon World Cup circuit began here on Wednesday with the participation of 178 athletes from 34 countries and regions.
The women's and men's qualification will be on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. The women's individual final is scheduled for Friday, the men's for Saturday and the mixed relay will close the competition on Sunday.
The first event of the 2019 UIPM Pentathlon World Cup was held in Cairo, Egypt, from the end of February to the beginning of March. The third and fourth rounds will be in Szekesfehervar in Hungary and Prague in the Czech Republic in May, and the final will take place in Tokyo, Japan, on June 27.
UIPM president Dr Klaus Schormann noted on the organization's official website that throughout this year, the pentathlon could be seen at its best, as athletes from many countries plot their journey to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and aim to achieve peak performance.
Points accrued by the athletes in Sofia will count towards qualification for the Pentathlon World Cup Final 2019, also in Tokyo.
