KHARTOUM, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) on Thursday announced the release of all political detainees nationwide, official SUNA news agency reported.
The NISS made the announcement in a statement, without providing further details, SUNA said.
Earlier in the day, the official Sudan TV said the Sudanese Armed Forces would announce an important statement soon.
According to eyewitnesses, military reinforcements are seen around the Sudan Radio and TV building.
Sudan's capital Khartoum on Saturday and Sunday saw large protests that ended with open sit-ins before the Sudanese army general headquarters.
Since Dec. 19 last year, Sudan has been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.
