LONDON, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Ingmar De Vos, President of the equestrian world governing body FEI, has been elected to the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Council at its General Assembly held during the SportAccord World Sport and Business Forum in Gold Coast, Australia, FEI said in a statement on Tuesday.

De Vos, who was elected in the first round of voting, is also a member of the ASOIF Governance Task Force which was created in November 2015 to promote and ensure a culture of good governance within International Federations.

"I am truly honoured to be elected as an ASOIF Council member and would like to thank my colleagues for their confidence in me," he said. "It was a close vote but I was happy to be elected in the first round. I'd like to congratulate my colleagues who were also elected today and look forward to working together with my fellow Council members to further the mission and role of this important organisation in the Olympic movement."

De Vos, whose mandate will run through to 2023, was one of seven candidates running for election for three vacancies on the Council. Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), and Japan's Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), were also elected in the first round of voting.

The eight-member Council is now made up of De Vos, Watanabe, Casado, ASOIF President Ricci Bitti of Italy, World Archery President Ugur Erdener of Turkey, IAAF President Sebastien Coe of Britain, Serbia's Nenad Lalovic, President of United World Wrestling and Andrew Ryan of Britain, the ASOIF Executive Director.

A Belgian native, De Vos was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during the IOC Session in Lima in 2017 and, in 2018 was appointed member of the IOC Legal Affairs and Digital and Technology Commissions.

Since 2018, he is also a member of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) Council and member of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Executive Committee and Foundation Board.
