RIO DE JANEIRO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's agricultural harvest is forecast to be 231.5 million tons for 2019, up 2.2 percent from last year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said Thursday.

The forecast increased by 0.6 percent compared with the projection released last month, and would be the second largest in Brazil's history, surpassed only by 2017 when 238.4 million tons were harvested.

The area earmarked for planting this year is 62.3 million acres, a 2.2-percent increase over 2018.

According to IBGE, soy, corn and rice will remain the three main agricultural products for Brazil, together representing 92.8 percent of the total production and occupying 87.3 percent of the entire planting area.
