KAMPALA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's star athlete Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei will lead the country's team to the 2019 IAAF Shanghai Diamond League in China on May 18.

Dominic Otuchet, the president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, told Xinhua on Monday that they are sending a strong team to China, which should be able to perform well against the world's best.

Cheptegei won a gold medal at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark in March this year to add on the two gold medals he won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The team has been training well and will depart on Wednesday ahead of the competition, said Otuchet.

Cheptegei will compete in the 5,000m race, while 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Stella Chesang competes in the 3,000m, he said.

Esther Chebet and Winnie Nanyondo will compete in the 1,500m race and Peruth Chemutai in the 3,000 steeplechase.

The 2019 IAAF Shanghai Diamond League will be the second stop on the International Association of Athletics Federations' global circuit of premier one-day meetings.
