Backgrounder: China's achievements in helping, supporting disabled people

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- New achievements were made in 2018 in improving the livelihood of and public services for the 85 million disabled people across China.

The following are some facts:

-- More than 1 million disabled people were newly lifted out of poverty in 2018.

-- There were 666,000 disabled students at schools for compulsory education in 2018, some 87,000 more than a year ago.

-- A total of 118,000 urban disabled people were newly employed, and 494,000 disabled people were provided with occupational training.

-- The dilapidated houses of 113,000 families of disabled persons were renovated and barrier-free facilities were installed at over 1.1 million homes with disabled persons.

-- There are nearly 3,000 social organizations nationwide dedicated to helping the disabled, providing services in fields including rehabilitation, education, employment, nursing care, culture and sport, and barrier-free facilities.

-- Since 1991, more than 2,000 institutions and individuals have been honored as role models in fields promoting the self-development of the disabled and social support for them.

-- A special welfare system that covers tens of millions of disabled people has been established, providing financial assistance for their daily life, nursing and children's rehabilitation.

-- Priority has been given to helping poor rural disabled residents escape poverty.

-- Efforts have been accelerated to make rehabilitation services available to all the disabled, and promote better education and equal opportunities for the disabled.

China marks the 29th National Day for Helping the Disabled on May 19, the third Sunday of May.
