RIO DE JANEIRO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Former Benfica and Sporting Lisbon boss Jorge Jesus has been appointed head coach of Flamengo, the Brazilian club said on Saturday.

Jesus will join the Rio de Janeiro outfit in mid-June on a one-year contract, having agreed to terms during a meeting with Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim in Madrid on Saturday.

"What convinced me was the greatness of Flamengo," the Portuguese coach told Globo Esporte. "It is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I'll have the chance to win the Copa Libertadores and the club World Cup. Those objectives are what made me accept this challenge."

The announcement came three days after Flamengo parted ways with manager Abel Braga after just five months.

Jesus is regarded as one of Benfica's greatest ever managers, having guided the club to two straight Europa League finals, three Portuguese league titles, one Portuguese Cup and five League Cups during his six years in charge.

The 64-year-old's last managerial position was with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, whom he left in January.
