URUMQI, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A 750 kilovolt power transmission and transformation project started operation Saturday in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, according to the operator.
With a total of 176 kilometers, the project, which goes from southern Xinjiang's poverty stricken Kashgar Prefecture to Shache County, stretches across China's largest desert Taklimakan, according to the State Grid Electric Power Of Xinjiang.
The Kashgar-Shache project is to strengthen grid construction and improve the reliability of power supply in southern Xinjiang, helping the region attract enterprises and promote local economic and social development.
Similar projects have also been launched in southern Xinjiang's Hotan Prefecture and Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture, which are expected to be completed by the end of this month.
The operator said that the clean energy power projects would save 3.13 million tons of raw coal annually in the region.
