WUHAN, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The city of Yichang in central China's Hubei Province on Thursday released more than 34 million fish fry to the Yangtze, the longest river in China.

Among the fish fry are some protected species including the Chinese sturgeon and mullet, according to the agriculture and rural affairs bureau of the city.

Officials with the bureau said the releasing of the fish can increase the fish resources in the river and help improve the aquatic environment.

Sitting on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, the city of Luzhou in southwest China's Sichuan Province released 47,720 fish fry into the Yangtze Thursday.

Sichuan has initiated a series of programs to protect the Yangtze sturgeon and restore its habitat. The province has also carried out the artificial breeding of the precious species including the Yangtze sturgeon, the Mullet and the giant salamander.
