TAIYUAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- An international street dance competition will be held in the 2800-year-old city of Pingyao in China's Shanxi province from July 31 to August 3.
The 2019 Pingyao International Street Dance Competition, drawing 40 teams and 2,000 dancers from over 10 countries and regions, includes five categories: popping, hiphop, breaking, locking and routine crew.
More than 30 top international dancers will be invited to compete.
Street dance originated in the United States in the 1960s, and was introduced to China in the 1980s. It has gradually become a popular sport among teenagers.
As a world cultural heritage, Pingyao is a famous historical and cultural city in northern China, with more than 100,000 foreign tourists visiting here every year.
"The ancient city of Pingyao opens its arms to the world. We hope more people know Pingyao through street dance," the Pingyao county magistrate Shi Yong said.
