TOKYO, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Monday with the Nikkei index hitting a nearly two-month high.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 454.05 points, or 2.13 percent, from Friday at 21,729.97, its highest close since May 7.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, finished 33.71 points, or 2.17 percent, higher at 1,584.85.
By the close of play, marine transportation, electric appliance and metal product issues comprised those that gained the most, and advancing issues outnumbered decliners 2,010 to 108 on the First Section, while 30 ended unchanged.
Electric component maker TDK climbed 580 yen, or 7.0 percent, to 8,920 yen while Murata Manufacturing advanced 240 yen, or 5.0 percent, to 5,080 yen.
Semiconductor-related issues also outperformed. Advantest jumped 185 yen, or 6.2 percent, to 3,150 yen, with Tokyo Electron up 720 yen, or 4.8 percent, at 15,840 yen.
On the main section on Monday, 1,202.44 million shares changed hands, rising from Friday's 1,151.27 million shares.
