KIEV, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed a de-escalation of the conflict in Donbas with U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker, according to the president's press service on Wednesday.

During the meeting in Toronto, Canada, Zelensky, who is currently on his first official visit to the country, said that he has great hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine and a re-launch of the Trilateral Contact Group.

The successful pullback on both sides of the contact line in the area of Stanitsa Luganskaya showed that diplomacy is working, he said.

"Great meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky -- clear commitment to peace in Donbas ... He pledged his strong commitment to reforming Ukraine which we fully support," Volker tweeted following the meeting.

The Trilateral Contact Group is a group of representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe with a mandate to seek out a diplomatic solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The violence in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, broke out in March 2014 as separatist forces clashed with government forces. There have been dozens of ceasefires since the conflict erupted.
