AU condemns terrorist attack in Somalia

ADDIS ABABA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Saturday condemned the terrorist attack in Somalia's port city of Kismayo that has so far killed some 26 people.

"The Chairperson strongly condemns the terrorist attack that took place in Somalia's port city of Kismayo on July 12," an AU statement issued on Saturday read.

Faki also "expressed his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a swift recovery to those injured in the attack."

The chairperson also reiterated "the firm and continued solidarity of the African Union with the people of Somalia in their pursuit for peace in their country."

Somalia's Jubbaland State president Ahmed Mohamed Madobe said those killed included two American citizens, one British, three Tanzanians, three Kenyans and one Canadian. Among those injured were two Chinese citizens.

Madobe said the operation at Madina hotel came to an end after the security forces shot dead four al-Shabab militants inside the building, adding the number of the dead had climbed to 26.
