DHAKA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed by lightning strikes in parts of Bangladesh on Saturday.

According to hospital and local sources, most of the people who died were working on farms in three Bangladesh districts, Pabna, Mymensingh and Chuadanga.

Four people including three of the same family died on the spot by a lightning strike in Pabna district, some 216 km west of capital Dhaka, on Saturday afternoon while processing rotten jute in a field.

Three workers died on the spot after a thunderbolt struck them while they were loading banana on a truck in Chuadanga district, some 215 km west of Dhaka.

Three more deaths have been reported from Mymensingh district, some 122 km north of capital Dhaka, in separate lightning strikes.

A government official in Dhaka could not immediately confirm the toll.

Death due to lightning strikes is common in Bangladesh during this time of the year, as the weather changes from the dry season to the rainy summer season.

Bangladesh is experiencing a surge of lightning strike deaths in recent years.

According to data compiled by a non-government organisation, Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum, at least 126 people were killed by lightning strikes across Bangladesh in the past two months, May and June of this year.
