ROME, July 13 (Xinhua) -- At least one person died on Saturday as wildfires spread in southern Italy.

Firefighters said a burned body was found in the southeast Apulia region, after a blaze ravaged a protected forest in the location of Punta Pizzo in the bay of Gallipoli.

The discovery occurred during the operations to extinguish the fire, the Fire Corp added.

Forensic police was called on the spot to verify the dynamic of the events, and whether the fire was the real cause of death.

Along with Apulia, the island of Sardinia was another region so far affected by the blazes, which often occur in Italy during summer time, and especially in the south where the weather is hotter and drier.

Residents and tourists were evacuated from at least 20 houses and a camping resort in Sardinia, as wildfires reached a beach in the municipality of Tortolì in the eastern Ogliastra area.

The fire front there stretched over three kilometers, and teams from the state forest service and civil protection joined the firefighters in tackle the emergency, according to Ansa news agency.
