BEIRUT, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun called upon the United Nations Security Council on Monday to extend the UNIFIL's mandate without cutting its budget or modifying its mission, the presidency's website reported.

"We hope that the UN Security Council does not do any modifications to the UNIFIL's mission or budget for it to be able to play a big role in cooperation with the Lebanese Army in southern Lebanon," Aoun was quoted as saying during his meeting with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Yan Kubish.

Aoun also gave an overview to Kubish about the excessive and continuous violations by Israel for Lebanon's sovereignty.

"Israel should be committed to UN Resolution 1701 in a bid to preserve security and stability on the borders and this is what Lebanon is doing through the deployment of the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL in southern Lebanon," Aoun said.

UNIFIL has been operating in southern Lebanon since 2006 by supporting land and maritime Lebanese forces in improving their capabilities and preserving peace in the area.
