UNITED NATIONS, July 16 (Xinhua) -- A UN peacekeeper was killed in an attack at a market in Abyei, a disputed border town between Sudan and South Sudan, a UN spokesman said Tuesday.

"The UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, or UNISFA, reports that two UN peacekeepers on duty were attacked by a group of unknown men at the Amiet Common Market in Abyei yesterday (Monday)," said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"One peacekeeper from Ethiopia died from gunshot injuries," Haq said.

"The mission reports that at least five people, including two women and a child, were also killed during the attack," Haq said, adding that the injured peacekeeper was evacuated for medical treatment.

The spokesman said UNISFA had deployed troops to search for the attackers.

The mission was established in 2011 by the Security Council to monitor the disputed border region.
