BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- China's national observatory on Friday warned of heavy rainfall in the country's northern regions as the main rain season is set to begin.

From July 21 to 23, the country's northern and northeastern regions are forecast to see heavy rain or rainstorms and enter the critical stage of flood control, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Flood warnings are issued for the lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Haihe River and the Liaohe River, and cities in the heavy rain area are advised to stay alert for possible flooding and waterlogging.

The rainy season of north China starts in late July and lasts until mid-August.

During the rainy season, the southern part of northeast China and eastern part of north China are forecast to see 20 percent to 50 percent more rainfall, with up to 200 mm of precipitation within 24 hours, said Gao Hui with the National Climate Center.
