KUNMING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- An air bomb from World War II has been found in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said Friday.

The bomb was unearthed by local workers at a construction site in Tengyue Township in the city of Tengchong on July 13, according to a source of the city's public security bureau.

The bomb, which was about 80 cm in length and 25 cm in diameter, was later removed to a safe place, with protection of the police around the clock.

"After examination, we found that it was an explosive from World War II," said the source, quoting an unnamed explosives expert.

There were obvious signs of English letters on it. Based on historical data and further examination, the explosives expert concluded that it was an American-made air bomb, warning there is still a risk of explosion.

Police then buried the bomb in a local abandoned mine with the assistance of professional explosive/ordnance disposal personnel and detonated it Monday.

Tengchong, which is located on the China-Myanmar border, used to be one of the main battlefields for fighting the Japanese aggressors in World War II.
