JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese table tennis players continued their great performance at T2 Diamond 2019 quarterfinals in Malaysia's state of Johor on Saturday but also suffered some setbacks.
The quarterfinals opened with an upset for China after women's singles No. 1 Chen Meng was beaten by Japan's Miyu Kato 4-2, with Chen being unable to recover during the two FAST5 rounds.
"I couldn't get into the rhythm of the game. I made too many unforced errors today and that cost me the match," Chen said following the match.
However, Chinese players took the other three spots in Women's semifinals. Wang Manyu scored a decisive 4-0 victory against Han Ying of Germany. Zhu Yuling beat compatriot Sun Yingsha 4-0 despite Sun putting up an intense fight, before Ding Ning beat Singaporean Feng Tianwei 4-1.
In men's singles, Ma Long lost to Lin Yun-ju of Chinese Taipei 4-2 in a fierce play, with the match ending with a FAST5 victory by Lin.
"Well, that was a match. A loss is a loss," Ma said of the game.
Ma's teammate Xu Xin easily getting the better of his Swedish opponent Mattias Falck 4-1. He will face Fan Zhendong in the semifinals, as Fan beat Lin Gaoyuan 4-0 in a match between the Chinese players.
The tournament will continue on Sunday with remaining 8 players set to face off in back to back semifinals and finals.
