UNITED NATIONS, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Monday called on parties in the Syrian conflict to allow for the clearance of explosive remnants following the landmine deaths of a young man and a child.
The UN calls on all parties to the conflict to allow clearance of explosive remnants of war and to safely conduct risk education activities and ensure the respect and safety for humanitarian staff conducting clearance activities, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"Our humanitarian colleagues say that the threat of explosive hazards remains a major concern in Syria, with more than 10 million people estimated to live in contaminated areas," Haq said.
On Sunday, a 20-year-old man in Hatla town in Deir Ezzour Governorate was killed by a landmine explosion and a 5-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries following a landmine explosion outside of Al-Jafra town, the spokesman said.
