DAMASCUS, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber detonated himself while a Syrian army unit was raiding an area in the southern province of Daraa on Saturday, state news agency SANA reported.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt while the army unit was raiding a "terrorist" hideout in the town of Mlaihet al-Atash in the northeastern countryside of Daraa, said the report.

The explosion led to the injury of a number of soldiers, who were taken to the city of Sanamein to receive medical treatment.

On July 17, an explosion targeted a Syrian military vehicle in Daraa, leaving killed and wounded personnel.

On July 15, unknown gunmen opened their fire on a military camp in Daraa, leaving many wounded soldiers.

As the birthplace of the Syrian war that erupted in 2011, Daraa is both symbolically and militarily significant for the Syrian army which won a big victory by recapturing the province from the rebels in 2018.

Following its liberation, a new rebel group called the "Popular Resistance" has emerged in Daraa.

The aim of the new group is to target the positions of the Syrian army and renew the rebellion in Daraa.
