JERUSALEM, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian on Thursday after he crossed from Gaza and opened fire at troops, injuring three of them, the military said.

During the overnight incident, the army said in a statement, an "assailant fired at the troops" after infiltrating to Israel through the security fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel.

He wounded three, including an officer, who was moderately injured, and two other combat soldiers, who sustained light injuries.

More troops arrived at the scene and "located the assailant and responded with fire towards him," resulting in his death, the army said.

Also during the incident, an Israeli army tank fired artillery at a Hamas military post. There were no reports of casualties from this fire.

The gunman was later identified by local media as Hani Abu Salah. The Hebrew-language Ynet news site reported that he was a member of a Hamas unit responsible for restraining border violent protests along the fence, including infiltrations into Israeli territory.

The trespassing triggered mobilization of additional forces to secure communities near the Gaza border for fear that more armed men infiltrated into Israeli.

The incident was the recent violence in spiraling tensions between Gaza and Israel.

On Friday, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian protester near the fence.

The weekly demonstrations near the fence, called "The Great March of Return," protest the crippling 12-year blockade Israel has imposed on the coastal enclave.

About 210 Palestinians have been killed since the rallies began in March 2018, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
