Unemployment in Q2 hits record low in Bulgaria

SOFIA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in Bulgaria fell to 4.2 percent in the second quarter of 2019, reaching a record low level, the Labour Force Survey of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) showed on Wednesday.

"There was no lower rate registered in the last 16 years since the study was conducted according to this methodology," the NSI said.

There were 142,000 people registered as unemployed in Bulgaria, and unemployment rate went down by 1.3 percentage points from the second quarter of 2018, the NSI said.

Of the total number of unemployed persons, 58.2 percent were men and 41.8 percent women, the NSI said.

Meanwhile, 15.1 percent of all unemployed persons had attained a higher level of education, 45.1 percent had completed upper secondary education, and 39.8 percent had at most lower secondary education, the NSI said.

The number of long-term unemployed persons (those unemployed for longer than a year) was 84,500, the NSI added.
