KHARTOUM, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The European Union has provided 7 milion euros (7.8 million U.S. dollars) in support of the UN World Food Programme (WFP)'s emergency operations in Sudan, a Sudanese news portal reported on Wednesday.
It is a top-up contribution after last year's 6 million euros provided to the WFP, according to a WFP statement quoted by the Sudan Tribune.
The EU funding would support critical activities including nutrition assistance to mothers and children in remote areas where WFP provides food supplements for treating and preventing malnutrition, the statement said.
The funding would also support cash-based transfers for vulnerable and food-insecure communities to provide much-needed assistance to as many as 600,000 people including the internally displaced persons and refugees across the states of North and South Darfur, it added.
Some 1.8 million children under five are being affected by malnutrition across Sudan.
