AMMAN, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Wednesday underlined the need to step up efforts to achieve just, comprehensive and lasting peace on the basis of the two-state solution between Palestinians and Israelis.

Such a solution should guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the king said at a meeting with a U.S. Congress delegation in the capital Amman.

He voiced Jordan's appreciation for the U.S. support for various development programs while emphasizing the important role of the U.S. Congress in this regard, according to a Royal Court statement obtained by Xinhua.

Meanwhile, the U.S. delegation expressed appreciation for Jordan's role in promoting peace and stability in the region and dealing with the current regional conditions.

Earlier in the day, Jordanian Prime Minster Omar Razzaz also met with the U.S. Congress delegation, highlighting the need to intensify efforts to reach a just and sustainable peace in the region.

Razzaz stressed Jordan's firm support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis in order to preserve Syria's territorial integrity and unity while ensuring the voluntary return of refugees.
